Chapter 6
The First Test
What had started as near sobs turned into silent tears as the material under her face became soaked with the repressed years of sorrow? A small voice in her mind was screaming about how wrong it was for her to be in this position, but her body seemed eager to cling to the sensation of warmth. She pressed her face into his chest as some of the pain began to ease. It wasnât gone, but the artist no longer felt the ache that had settled in her heart following her fatherâs death. Her experiences taught her to ignore or dismiss it because trying to deal with it only created more pain.
When the tears dried up, though, Josephine felt an intense sense of shame. Pulling back quickly, she tried to hide her face with her hair. âIâm so sorry. I didnâtâ"
A warm hand touched her shoulder, halting her hurried movements and apology. âDonât do that. It wonât help.â The eyes looking at her were just as kind as they were all those years ago when she wore the black dress. He never did ask for her story, but Josephine could tell that he must have figured it was an event she didnât want to deal with as a child. Black wasnât a normal color for a young girl to wear, so despite not having spoken of the funeral or death of her father, she guessed that Nigel had almost certainly realized that someone close to her had died. Now here he was, giving her an understanding smile. âDownplaying the pain is only postponing the inevitable. I know that it wonât help. Just look around me.â He turned his head to indicate the things that she could see.
Through her stuffy nose, Josephine couldnât stop hiccupping and giggling. âI donât know how the impressions are formed because Iâve never seen them form. I can only guess what makes them get worse or more entrenched. Iâve only seen them following people around, rarely getting close enough to anyone to figure out if facing or ignoring the pain will help.â She looked at him and relaxed a little at his smile. âI donât know how it works. I just have a basic idea of what Iâm seeing after they form,â she finally admitted.
âThereâs no shame in that. If it helps you feel better, most of us fumble through our abilities, even if we have a family of shifters to help. Our abilities are too random to be predictable, so we usually donât know anyone who can help us. And the more powerful the family, the more unpredictable and powerful the abilities. Thatâs true, regardless of the shifter type. There generally are some common abilities, and self-healing is almost universal. Beyond that, we are on our own to learn how to use those abilities.â He moved around the desk and grabbed a box of tissue. âHere. You can have this until you feel better.â
Josephine looked down at the box, then pulled one of the tissues out with one hand and grabbed the box with the other.
